We received this question in the comments section of the Tough Questions series launch post:
This is a good question, and it's a complex topic, but then on the other hand I wonder why it is a question at all.
First, it is important to note that we accept that one of God's main attributes is omnipresence (see Psalm 139 for evidence). This means that he is present everywhere, and since sin is present in some places, that means that God is present in some places where there is sin and unholiness, not to mention simply looking on unholiness. In fact, God is present with us right now!
As we can see from God simply showing his back to Elijah, the mightiness and holiness of God is truly awesome, and I think that if we were to look on his full majesty it might destroy us. But obviously, if God is present with us right now, he isn't revealing his full holiness. Thus, it is not necessary for him to reveal his full holiness when he is simply looking upon us.
Therefore, I see no reason for God not to be able to look upon unholiness.
But in regards to whether or not he sees our unholiness, that is a subject for another entire post!
Your Turn: Can you think of a reason for God not to be able to look upon our unholiness?
"How can a holy God look down upon our unholiness??"
