Lessons About Living Things

I am constantly amazed by the vastness and complexity of the universe.

As a university student, each day I have the pleasure of learning about different aspects of the world that we live in - societies, culture, communication, environments, organisms, and so many other facets of life.

For instance, I was simply fascinated to learn the following information through my first lecture in a basic biology class.  By no means is this an advanced or difficult course (the reason that I am taking it is to fulfill a prerequisite for a future class),  but nevertheless, one can learn a great deal from the material presented!

  • Biodiversity
  • The earth is home to a huge number of different organisms:
  • 1.5 Million different species have been identified so far - 40% of which are insects (typically different types of beetles)
  • It is estimated that 5 to 30 million species exist on, in, and      around the world.
  • With this knowledge in mind, the portion of species that have been identified ranges from a mere 30% all the way down to as little as 5%.

It is amazing to think about how many living organisms are out there that have never been officially recorded or documented.  It is safe to say that a good percentage of all of the species in the world will NEVER be documented in this way.

I stand amazed at the sheer quantity of animals, plants, microorganisms, and all other living things (much less the details and complexity of every single unit).

  3. It's so true isn't it - Creation displays His majesty! It is so far beyond our ability to comprehend and explain! We can, however, stand here and marvel at the vastness and complexity of it all!

Thanks for posting - Any other things that come to mind that leave you in an awestruck state?

  4. Pretty cool. Never realized that it is estimated that there are several million species unidentified as of yet.

Facts about space leave me in an awestruck state. I would list some, but I do not remember them in specific detail. Suffice it to say that the size of the stars and the speed that things are moving in space makes me internally say "Wow... that is really cool." I've actually thought that maybe I should take some astronomy courses. These facts help me think about how big God is and about how big His love is to send Jesus to the little blip in the universe we call Earth.

  5. Kaitlynn,
    you got it.
thanks for putting it so succinctly and poetically.

  6. Kaitlynn,

Good thoughts! I've had similar desires when it comes to taking astronomy courses and geology/environment classes. I think, on occasion, that they would definitely help me to develop an even greater appreciation for God's creation - The natural world around me. It's so cool to think of his love and how his majesty and wondered are displayed for us to see.

God's creation is not there to primarily show us of our insignificance, but rather to help us to focus on His significance. In other words, I think it helps to keep our perspective in check by saying this:

It's not about how small WE are. It's about how big GOD is.

    Some more thoughts,

  7. Very astute, A.J.

    Thanks for the reminder.
    How do I put this?

We are just clay in the Potter's hands, yet He chooses to use the insignificant things of this world to show and display His glory...and guess what, if He does that and we are vessels willing to be used AS that, we are NOT INSIGNIFICANT ANYMORE. But He is MORE.
